REVIEWS:
  • Looney Tunes: Back in Action is a frenetic and fast-paced live action-animation blend that may not be a true classic but which packs in more than enough fun to make it worth watching, especially for cartoon fanatics. Looney is overall a good zany time and comes about as close to capturing some of the magic of the cartoon characters from their heyday as is possible. Of course, there's also the live action portion of the film to contend with, and it's undoubtedly true that the "real" people in Looney get the short end of the stick. After all, how can flesh-and-blood actors compete with the likes of Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny? It's not that they don't try or that they don't do well. Brendan Fraser is about as appealing as one could wish, and Jenna Elfman is deliciously corporate. And Steve Martin, in over the top mode, still can't compete with real toons, but he gives it a good college try. Still, there's an imbalance between reality and "cartoon-ity" that persists throughout the film and weakens it a bit, as does the fact that even Joe Dante's wild direction can't keep the frantic pace up without it becoming a tad wearing. Still, when Looney is in top form -- as when Elmer Fudd is chasing Daffy and Bugs through the Louvre or when the characters are in a wonderful sci-fi land -- Looney is tremendously engaging. ~ Craig Butler, Rovi
  • Many lesser basketball stars have graced the big screen, so it was almost a surprise that it took Michael Jordan this long. But it should be no surprise that Space Jam isn't half the fun of simply watching one of Jordan's highlight reels. For all his choreographed jams in dunk contests, Michael Jordan found his greatest glory during moments of in-game improvisation, when his stunning talent manifested itself as pure instinct. In a semi-animated movie, the necessarily careful staging removes the wonder from Jordan's repertoire, leaving only generic feats of above-average athleticism that have no real-world reference point. Of course, Space Jam is not meant as a highlight reel, rather, an opportunity to promote the persona of Michael Jordan and revive a cast of beloved Warner Brothers cartoons that haven't been dusted off in years. On these scores it's also weak, even with R. Kelly singing "I Believe I Can Fly" as urgently as anyone could want. Trying to insinuate themselves into a sophisticated world of animation that has passed them by, the characters seem like relics, their old-fashioned quips as tired as the hand joints of the animators who draw them. Where Space Jam does find a few laughs is in the cameos of other NBA players, notably Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing, who struggle humorously with methods to recoup their stolen basketball skills. It's while spoofing himself that Jordan is also most effective, including some good-sport jabs at his brief and comical foray into professional baseball. ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi
  • More than a decade after the seamlessly eye-popping blend of live action and animation that was Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), this box-office turkey putters along unimaginatively, cutting back and forth between the two. Long before its conclusion, this gross-out comedy has already run out of gas, both literally and figuratively. It's to be expected that the barons of bodily function humor known as the Farrelly brothers would be responsible for a film filled to the brim with jokes inspired by puke, acne, mucous, flatulence, digestive juices, and more. The difference between this film and some of the merry pranksters' other work is that here, it's just not funny -- it is truly, horribly disgusting. Bill Murray, as a hygienically challenged zookeeper, tries to muster the energy to mug briefly in his truncated scenes, but it seems the veteran comic pro knows how lame the end result will be and sagely sleepwalks through the proceedings. Although he manages to demonstrate he's got a pulse, vocal co-star Chris Rock becomes as annoying as nails on a chalkboard, his screeching, babbling patter eventually merging into a deafening sonic whine. Nobody emerges unscathed from this brain-dead pile of guano, one of the year's top must-miss titles and a picture that will be hard-pressed to entertain even pre-pubescent boys. To see Osmosis Jones is finally to understand why they called such lowbrow shtick "gags." ~ Karl Williams, Rovi
