REVIEWS:
- Any Gun Can Play is a fun, surprisingly lighthearted take on the spaghetti western genre. In fact, it's particularly fascinating because it is as much a crime caper as it is a western thanks to a plot that focuses on double and triple-crosses between characters who struggle for the upper hand while searching out a hidden cache of gold. Any Gun Can Play also has a sense of humor that keeps the proceedings engaging. Director Enzo Castellari wisely plays into this aspect of the material, mixing conventional shootouts with bits of slapstick humor that dovetail nicely with the action. In terms of acting, George Hilton anchors the film with a solid, slyly humorous performance as the film's mysterious hero. He also receives nice support from Edd Byrnes as a banker opponent who becomes an ally and Gilbert Roland's authoritative turn as a wily crime kingpin. A classic-style spaghetti western score from Francesco De Masi seals the film's charm. In short, Any Gun Can Play is a nice diversion for spaghetti western fans looking for a break from the genre's sometimes brutal excesses. ~ Donald Guarisco, Rovi
- On the surface, Damiano Damiani's Confessions of a Police Captain (aka Confessione di un Commissario di Polizia al Procuratore della Repubblica) is a fairly typical European crime picture from the 1970s, full of dirty dealings and internecine squabbling among both cops and outlaws, but the film has just enough unusual touches to put it a few cuts above the average. While Franco Nero was never one of the most expressive actors of his generation, here his narrow range makes him seem steely and determined as a District Attorney determined to find out the truth behind the murder of a mob chieftain, and Martin Balsam brings some much-needed vigor to his role as the titular police detective who may have stepped outside the law in the name of justice. Balsam and Nero play a compelling game of thrust and parry throughout the film, and if Balsam generally bests his partner in their verbal jousting, Nero is a good straight man and Balsam gets to show a bit more swagger than he was usually allowed on screen. Director Damiani gives the story just enough grit to keep things interesting, and by periodically taking the story into a mental hospital he adds a surreal undertow to the proceedings, especially as Balsam interacts with some of the more eccentric patients. Confessions of a Police Captain is a long way from one of the great crime films of the era -- the second act moves too slow before winding up for a solid finish -- but it just enough style and imagination to make it worth a look for loyal Eurotrash followers. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
- This cheap, forgotten actioner is a junk cinema classic just waiting to be enjoyed for all the wrong reasons. Fried logic, confusing mise-en-scene and botched sound dubbing result in a cast of characters who all appear stoned, stupid or brain-damaged. Luckily, there's enough whacked action to entertain viewers with a taste for peculiar films, and this is one for them to track down. The Executioner, Part 2 isn't a sequel to anything, and even if the premise is familiar, it has no relation to any similarly-named release. A masked vigilante is striking back against the crime syndicate that rules the streets, and both the police and the crooks want him stopped. As usual, Viet Nam is to blame for the executioner's bloodthirsty tendencies; he suffers frequent flashbacks during his crime-busting rampages and his favored method of killing is to stuff a military-issue hand grenade into an evil-doer's pants (resulting in the same stock-footage explosion every time). There are also some corrupt cops, sadistic pimps and naive teenage drug addicts on hand, one of whom can't control her persistent, braying laughter and gets the best lines (when a joint is passed she declares, "I wish this were coke, oh, heavenly coke!"). Aldo Ray keeps the wolf from his door with a few brief appearances as the police commissioner, and as the lead detective, Christopher Mitchum tries to make his apparent boredom look like suave composure by keeping a cigar firmly clenched between his teeth while karate-chopping bad guys in poorly choreographed fight scenes. Screenwriter and producer Renee Harmon awards herself a prominent, if undeserved, role as a local TV news personality who helps Mitchum search for clues. It's doubtful that any television station would employ a dowdy, middle-aged lady with a thick Teutonic accent as an anchorwoman, particularly in Los Angeles, but that's a minor suspension of disbelief compared to the plethora of puzzling moments in The Executioner, Part 2. Harmon enjoyed a brief B-picture career that also produced the even weirder Frozen Scream, which was paired with The Executioner, Part 2 as a videotape double feature in the mid-80s and gained both films their widest distribution. She collaborated with Executioner director James Bryan again in the biker-themed Hellriders; Bryan is also responsible for the execrable slasher exercise Don't Go In The Woods. ~ Fred Beldin, Rovi
