REVIEWS:
- Based on the novel by master British spy novelist John Le Carre, The Russia House is as classy, smooth, and elegant as the jazz score Jerry Goldsmith wrote for it, which features the saxophone strains of Branford Marsalis. Director Fred Schepisi shot the film in several Russian cities which gives it a sumptuous palate and corresponds with the lush ironies and scope of Tom Stoppard's script. Schepisi and Stoppard draw parallels in the film between sex and spying, making you wonder exactly who is doing it to whom, but they do it with none of the vulgar humor John Boorman later used to good but obvious effect in The Tailor of Panama. If anything, The Russia House is supposed to be a love story, but there's a certain distance between Connery and Pfeiffer that makes the romance the film's least convincing aspect. The better scenes concern the spying, with Fox and Scheider displaying better chemistry than Connery and Pfeiffer. Fox gives his role an understated dignity and idealistic grace that contrasts nicely with Scheider's bluntness and ersatz vulgarity. The film also features strong supporting work from John Mahoney, the late J.T. Walsh, the director Ken Russell, and Klaus-Maria Brandauer as the Russian scientist named Dante. In two sharp scenes, Brandauer effectively conveys the world-weariness and almost desperate need for redemption that would force a man to commit treason to escape from a moral hell that would rival that of his namesake. Like Presumed Innocent, which was also released in 1990, The Russia House is the work of a great director, writer, and cast turning a fine novel into a very good and serious film. ~ Nick Sambides, Jr., Rovi
- The Fabulous Baker Boys was Steve Kloves' first time in the director's seat and only his second screenwriting credit, but nowhere does the inexperience show. He confidently crafts a story rich with realistic characters, genuine feeling, and an ample amount of beautiful music. Not a lot actually happens in the film, but that's part of its charm. Casting real-life brothers Jeff Bridges and Beau Bridges made Kloves' job a lot easier: they're so convincing that one wonders whether the story might have touched on any actual rivalries between them. Michelle Pfeiffer earned an Oscar nomination for one of her finest performances; her classic piano-top rendition of "Makin' Whoopee" is enough to make the film worth seeing. Cinematographer Michael Ballhaus also deserves credit for his work here, bringing a sensual glow to the film and the performers. ~ Matthew Doberman, Rovi
- The tone of Jonathan Demme's gangster comedy Married to the Mob comes very close to being too over-the-top for its own good, but the superb cast pulls it off without a hitch. Michelle Pfeiffer, with a heavy New York Italian accent, and Matthew Modine, as the so square-he's-hip Fed trailing her, do a fine job of both being funny and portraying the tentative beginnings of a new romance. But it is Dean Stockwell as the mob boss and Mercedes Ruehl as his very suspicious wife who walk off with the film. An authentic Italian-American, Brian De Palma, could not achieve this same balance of wackiness in his mob comedy Wise Guys, showing how difficult it is to successfully get laughs out of such extreme characters in a setting as threatening as the mafia. The material in Married to the Mob is so exaggerated that Italian-Americans could have found it offensive (especially since Demme is not Italian), but his abiding love of his characters, even the crazy ones, stands out above everything else making this light comedy one of the most enjoyable, if least essential, films of Demme's fantastic career. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi
