MOVIE DESCRIPTION:
Paul Crowder and Murray Lerner's excellent documentary on the history of one of Britain's greatest rock bands has been given an admirable presentation in this DVD release from Universal Home Entertainment. Amazing Journey: The Story of the Who has been given a widescreen transfer to disc, letterboxed in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio on conventional televisions and enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16x9 monitors, and the film looks very good indeed; the new interview footage is well photographed and reveals a subtle but broad color balance, and the archival material looks as good as current technology permits, with a number of clips boasting better image detail than in their previous appearances on home video. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, and the mix is bracing and well detailed, especially on the more recent material, though the archival footage sounds surprisingly strong. The interviews and performances are in English, with optional English subtitles for the hearing impaired but no multiple language options (which makes the presence of a "Language" page on the main menu rather odd). The feature appears on disc one, while disc two is devoted to bonus materials. The "Six Quick Ones" feature offers individual profiles of the four original members of the Who, with noted musicians discussing their style and techniques, as well as a look at how the influence of contemporary art impacted the group and a short documentary on the recording of 2004's "Real Good Looking Boy", which was the first new Who track in twenty-two years. The disc also includes some outtakes from Amazing Journey, including manager Bill Curbishley's thoughts on the 1979 Who concert in Cincinnati, Ohio that claimed the lives of eleven fans, and a truly remarkable story of a prank John Entwistle pulled on a drunken Keith Moon. And finally, this edition features some recently discovered film of the Who performing in London in 1964 during their brief period as the High Numbers, which looks and sounds terrific. Amazing Journey is a great film biography of the Who, and this DVD release presents it in high quality that should please longtime fans of the group. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
