REVIEWS:
- Tremors is a refreshing, energetic, genre-bending farce which pays homage to 1950s B-movies the likes of The Blob (1958), Them! (1954), and Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954). Working from a clever script, director Ron Underwood perfectly captures the dim, pulpy tone of the horror-adventures, without ever resorting to patronizing parody. Tremors retains enough of the genre's conventions to make the film work on a genuinely suspenseful level -- he elicits effective B-movie thrills while poking fun at them. A good deal of credit for the wry tone should go to Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward, who deliver marvelously whimsical, "straight" performances as the film's bumpkin heroes. The special effects and stunts are impressive: despite their intentional preposterousness, the giant worms are appropriately scary. The film was enough of a cult hit to warrant a direct-to-video sequel in 1995, named Tremors II: Aftershocks. ~ Brendon Hanley, Rovi
- The "Graboids" have returned and now there's a lot more of them. Earl Bassett (Fred Ward) and his newfound assistant are hired to hunt them down, and everything goes along peachy until they mutate into smaller versions with legs! Fun sequel manages to pack enough laughs and surprises to keep it interesting, but lacks the chemistry of Ward and Kevin Bacon that made the original a cult classic. ~ Sean D. MacLaggan, Rovi
- This direct-to-video sequel has all the pluses going for it of the previous adventures, not the least of which include good energy, funny dialogue, effective special effects, and a cast that is clearly enjoying hearty bonhomie and esprit du corps. It was daring for director Brent Maddock to enhance the creatures by giving them dragon-like wings, but it works very well and the computer generated effects are convincingly integrated. Michael Gross, game as always as the goofy Gummer, and Shawn Christian, who is a manly version of Greg Kinnear, make for an affable team. The overall production is imbued with wry wit and a giddy silliness that lurks below the surface like the Graboids, springing up to catch you with an unexpected joke. But when it comes time to portray the monsters as lethal creatures, there's tension enough to build suspense. One wonders how long the franchise can continue, but at least these three chapters have proven to be superior low-budget horror-comedies. ~ Buzz McClain, Rovi
