MOVIE DESCRIPTION:

This is an enjoyable box, comprised of seven episodes dating from the 1963 season of The Avengers. The quality is surprisingly high given the out of date videotape recording used at the time, and the story material at this point in the series was beginning to find some of the ground that would make the later series with Diana Rigg as much fun as it became. "The White Dwarf" could have been redone with Rigg, a story about the supposed sighting of a dwarf star headed toward our solar system, which will destroy the Earth. Or is it a con to disrupt financial markets for someone's personal gain? Another episode, "Conspiracy of Silence," is a kind of story the series stopped doing once it went international -- Patrick MacNee's John Steed turns up as an assassination targeted by the Mafia because of his success in interdicting drug smugglers, while Honor Blackman's Cathy Gale tries to find the hit man hired for the job at a circus; it involves all kinds of personal interactions among the criminals and the heroine that were removed from the scripts after the newer, wilder, less realistic approach to the series arrived. This volume also contains a bonus program, perhaps the most interesting show here, "Brief for Murder," in which Mrs. Gale finds herself going on trial for killing Steed.
